I noticed a weird slimming of my belly after temporarily eliminating all grains products, and instead all carbs only came from paleo vegetables and fruits and using Hoodia supplements. I wasn’t planning on this happening and I havent spent the $$$ to eliminate wheat for a longer duration so I will have to test this more before I know what caused it. Obviously people will chime in "calorie deficit" and I wont say nay or yay though I will note I never intended to reduce calories, didnt count them, and ate till full and satisfied, I’m focusing on putting on muscle mass right now anyway. Where your body stores calories first, you can't really control, how much fat you store you can. So replace the fat with lean mass. At the moment you start getting seriously into nutrition you will find that most of the stuff preached by health magazines and doctors is considered bullshit by modern day scientists and nutritionists. Though at the same time it's poisonous at relatively small amounts. A normal diet doesn't require added salt to your meals. Sure you need it, but just in tiny amounts. There's a reason people warn for this as salt is one of the main causes for high blood pressure from which lots of western people die.
Dutch consumer organization tested all kinds of vegetables and fruit. In some cases the organic vegetables had more residuals of pesticides on them than normal vegetables. Also the claim that organic vegetables are richer in nutrients was found to be false. When buying vegetables and fruit in Europe, do some research. For example Spain is notorious with pesticides and Holland grows many of its products without any pesticides (also non organic products). Something’s that are healthy for developing kids are not healthy for adults and older people, sugar is VITAL for brain development in early life but if you eat sweets like a 5 year old when your 55, good luck!
So who is best source of real nutrition information, not that outdated crap being sold to body-builders? How to get the basics quickly and easy? Hopefully one or more of you guys who know a lot about it can write basic info and/or products to learn from and sticky it in some kind of "where to start" thread. Yes they may be a bit conservative, but that is because they won't change their information before large scientific studies have proven stuff.
There are some people who find their advice outdated, but like I said it's because they want really thorough research to prove stuff. It's a good place to start, and then build from there. I also suggest being extra careful following advice from MDs. As an MD in training, and someone who's around MDs all day long, I can tell you that most of them don't know a damn thing about nutrition. Which is not surprising if anyone looks at the curriculum of medical schools -- you don't learn anything of quality about nutrition while in school to get an MD.
The most knowledgeable people in the world in the field of nutrition became that way from self-teaching and self-exploration of materials by the nutrition pioneers before them. Some of these experts are MDs, some are NDs, some are PhDs, some DOs, and many of them have none of those credentials.
